WIRRAL children 'dying for a swim' this Summer have been given a chilling warning by Port of Liverpool Police.

They are pointing out the dangers to both teenagers and younger children of playing in the waters around Wirral's dockside areas in Birkenhead and Wallasey.

Police have visited primary and secondary schools on Wirral as part of their 'Dying for a Swim' campaign, which aims to raise awareness among young people by giving talks and distributing leaflets with this hard hitting message: "You may be dying for a swim, but don't die for a few moments' fun. Keep out of the docks."

The campaign is targeting older children with the message that drowning is one of the most common causes of accidental deaths among teenagers.

Port of Liverpool Chief Officer Ray Walker said: "The real reward for us will be the knowledge that all the youngsters who break up for the Summer holidays are alive and able to return to school in September."
