WIRRAL residents are invited to put their best feet forward on a new wildlife walk to explore the diverse sights and sounds of Thurstaston Common, starting this Saturday.

The walks, accompanied by Wirral Warden Johnathan Twigg, are part of a national programme of wildlife events run by the National Trust. Weather permitting, Johnathan will give visitors an insight into the common which is home to bats, butterflies, birds, sheep and a wide range of fungi.

During a special evening bat walk an expert from the Merseyside Bat Group will show visitors where the bats "hang out" with the aid of sonar detector boxes. A member of the Wirral branch of the Butterfly Conservation Group will also add further interest to a butterfly walk by highlighting the various species.

Johnathan said: "The majority of walks are about two hours long and we hope visitors will enjoy the rich variety of wildlife on the common.

To join this Saturday's walk starts at 2pm, meet at the Ranger's office at Royden Park. Butterfly Walk, on Sunday August 1, meet at 2pm at Thurstaston Hill Car Park, Telegraph Road. For more details contact Wirral Warden Johnathan Twigg on 0771-34018267.
