A MARVELLOUS moggy from Thingwall has scooped up an award for being one of the UK's most caring cats.

Lilly, a red tabby, won the title of Britain's number one family cat when her human pals Emma, ten, and Kate Edwards, eight, nominated her to Arthur's cat food which runs the Awards.

Lilly has become the devoted companion of the girls' brother Steven, who is autistic.

Although the family own other cats, the girls explained that Lilly has become especially devoted to Steven.

"There is a special bond between them," said the girls.

"In the past Steven has not been aware of animals but Lilly's affection has helped him to develop socially and understand how to form relationships," they added.

Lilly will be attending a glittering awards ceremony in London on August 17 where she will be presented with a silver trophy and a year's supply of her favourite cat food.

Lilly will also find out whether or not she has won the 1999 Arthur's Cat of the Year award when one lucky cat will be awarded £1000.
