GCSE results at Birkenhead School were significantly up on 1998, with overall percentage passes at each grade close to the average over the previous five years.

A notable first this year was the 20 per cent figure for A*, meaning that one out of five papers sat achieved the top grade, with just under half of all papers achieving A* or A grade.

Of the 94 candidates, all achieved at least 5 A-C passes, with three boys distinguishing themselves with a clean sweep of A* passes and a further 14 achieving all A* or A grade passes. Simon Marshall, who has also represented England in representatives matches for cricket, deserves special recognition for his 9 A* passes.
