WIRRAL'S benefit claimants are going to come under investigation from the Benefit Fraud Inspectorate (BFI) for a year from this November.

The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked that the Inspectorate target the councils that pay out the most benefit and Wirral is among the top 22 payers.

The inspection will run from November until September next year.

Inspectorate Chairman Chris Bull said: "By Autumn 2000 inspections will have been completed on councils responsible for nearly 50 per cent of all the Housing and Council Tax benefits paid out.

"The BFI's approach to working in partnership with councils has already assisted many to raise standards of benefit administration and assist them in their efforts to counter fraud.

"I will be asking the inspection teams to particularly look out for examples of good practice that can be promoted to other councils."
