From George Bowler:-

J. POWELL'S letter (Mailbox, September 22) draws attention to some problems for many people who have to go a fortnight with no refuse collection on a Bank Holiday Monday.

This raises other issues, especially the big task of getting us all to reduce the domestic waste we produce day by day that fills our wheelie bins.

It all goes to a local landfill site. We are now fast reaching the time to really think about waste minimisation as the Bromborough tip has only a few years' life left. Recycling is an excellent aim, but for the past 10 years we in Wirral and elsewhere in the UK are making little headway to re-use and recycle.

In fact, we are going backwards as we seem to be set on throwing away more and more. We all have to face up to our responsibility . . .

The alternative to putting our heads in the sand will be the expensive one of transporting our household and municipal waste by road to another area. This will cost us all a lot more money, add to motor vehicle emissions and traffic congestion.

So please, Mr Powell, do take a moment to ask yourself and your friends: why is it that your wheelie bin and six plastic bags get filled within a fortnight?
