From Councillor Stuart Kelly:-
I WRITE on behalf of myself and my colleagues, Councillors Pat Williams and Freda Anderson, in support of the call by governors of Birkenhead School for traffic safety measures on Bidston Road (Globe, September 29).
As Ward councillors, we have also been pressing for measures to be introduced in Bidston Road and Talbot Road, such as pedestrian refuges and, possibly, a mini-roundabout at the junction with Wexford Road in order to improve visibility and slow down the traffic.
However, I must take exception to the comments made by the Chair of Highways when he says that Bidston Road "does not have excessive numbers of cars" or "heavy pedestrian use". Both these statements are clearly false, unless Councillor Smith is referring to a different Bidston Road altogether.
Also, it is true that there are no shops on Bidston Road; however, there is a school and as the council purports to support Safe Routes to Schools, I believe action must be taken soon to protect young and elderly people alike in the area.
Forest Road, Claughton.
