From Stuart Haggett, Headmaster, Birkenhead School:-
"BIDSTON Road does not have excessive numbers of cars, there is no heavy pedestrian use," states the Chair of Wirral's Transport Committee (Globe, last week).
I would suggest that councillors should check this road at about 3.30pm every weekday afternoon. At this time, it is virtually impossible for our pupils to see a gap in the traffic, let alone effect a safe crossing of the road.
I remain appalled that another serious accident is required before Wirral Borough Council will accept the validity of our argument. The aim of road safety is prevention of accidents and that is why the school has offered to fund a secure crossing point in the road.
I know of no criteria which can possibly be used to outweigh potential loss of life.
