LIBERAL Democrats in Wirral have reacted angrily to the news that Wirral Council has £2 million more than was expected in its coffers.

Liberal Democrat leader Phil Gilchrist claims that the fact that Wirral now has £6 million in its reserves is a result of last Spring's Council Tax hike. The Council approved a 6.9 per cent rise which was above the rate of inflation.

"This is a disgrace," said Coun Gilchrist. "Some of this money should be returned to Wirral in a way that will benefit the community.

"The Council's balances were expected to be between £3 million and £4 million. Money should be put into practical use, not left in a bank account untouched."

The Liberal Democrats believe that £1 million should be pledged to upgrade Wirral's play areas, making them safer for children to play in.

Said Coun Gilchrist: "Too many of our play areas are too poor and the Millennium is the ideal opportunity to put this right.

"What better legacy to future generations that to use this money to improve local play areas with safety surfaces and modern equipment."

Council Leader Dave Jackson (Labour) said: "As any family knows, finances always look healthier before the bills come in. We are only half way through the financial year and there are still a number of commitments we need to consider.

"It is easy in opposition to advocate a spending spree; in power it pays to be more prudent.

"The proper time for making spending decisions will be in March when we will have a better picture of the true financial position and will be able to weigh competing demands on the Council's finances properly against each other."
