BIRKENHEAD Blitz hero Frank Mumford is to be awarded a medal for his heroics as a World War Two fireman - SIXTY years after he earned it! Frank, now 95, joined the National Fire Service at Birkenhead in 1939 and spent the next six years fighting the flames caused by German bombs. Stationed in the basement of St Catherine's Hospital, he was often on duty for four or five days and nights continuously. Now, Mr Mumford's service is to be recognised by the presentation of The Defence Medal at a ceremony at Upton Fire Station next Monday. A caseworker for charity SSAFA Forces Help realised that Mr Mumford should have been presented with a medal for his work in the Fire Service. Merseyside Fire Brigade Community Relations Officer Mike Harris said: "It is a lovely story and I was very happy to help Mr Mumford get the medal he deserves."
