SIX staff are to be axed from Bidston Observatory.

As reported in last week's Globe, staff feared for their jobs following announcements of cost cuts.

The 130-year-old observatory is part of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Sciences (CCMS) controlled by the National Environment Research Council (NERC).

A spokesperson for NERC said: "The centre is facing severe financial difficulties, mainly because of a decline in external funding. It is now clear that there are more staff in CCMS than can be funded by external bodies."

NERC say 25 people will be made redundant across the country and six of those will be at Bidston.
