LOCAL RUGBY ROUND-UP by Andrew Stratton

CALDY are setting the pace at the head of North West One League. Their 19-6 derby success at Birkenhead Park was their fourth successive league win and they remain unbeaten.

Defences held the upperhand at the Upper Park, but Caldy grabbed the only try via Paul Wallace, Richard Farrall adding the goal. Farrall also put over four penalties, while Birkenhead Park had to be content with two successful kicks by Jason Gilbert.

There was no joy for Oldershaw at Aspull, who won 18-8. Neil Hawkins touched down for the Belvidere outfit and Willy Gardner landed a penalty.

Wallasey are still without a win in North West Three. Their only reward during a 3-35 reverse at St Edward's was an Ian Booth penalty.

Wirral made it 27-24 at Old Salians in South Lancashire/Cheshire League with Jez Ellis, Geoff Burgess and Colin Davies among the try scorers.

Anselmians finished 25-5 to the good against Sefton. Scott Tunna, Steve Pilgrim and Jamie Kimpton touched down. Gareth Williams added two goals and a couple of penalties.

A try by Paul Kay edged Hoylake to a 5-0 success at Collegiate, but Parkonians lost a defence dominated affair 3-6 at Vulcan. Prenton went under 7-29 at Moore while Port Sunlight were beaten 12-23 at Halton. Ellesmere Port finished 33-6 to the good at Bowdon.

There is NPI Cup action this Saturday as the league programme takes a break. Birkenhead Park go to Lymm and Oldershaw to Altrincham Kersal. Caldy, instead of visiting Wirral, must now journey to Wilmslow. Wirral have been ousted from the competition for fielding an unregistered player and Wilmslow re-instated.
