From Stuart Haggett, Headmaster, Birkenhead School:-

I AM frankly astonished by the response (Mailbox, last week) of Coun. Harry Smith, Chair of Wirral Highways Committee to my letter (Mailbox, October 6) condemning the decision not to provide a safe crossing facility for pupils of this school.

In resorting to sarcasm in his reference to 3.30pm, and in seeking to score cheap political points by belittling Councillor Kelly's group, he shows a frightening reluctance to engage with reality.

If our parents park further from the school, then our pupils will, of course, have more roads to cross, thus increasing precisely those dangers which we are seeking to minimise.

Neither can Coun. Smith hide behind the question of cost. This school has consistently offered to fund a safe crossing, both for the benefit of our pupils and those elderly residents who live in the flats nearby.

There is thus no need for him to dream dreams: get real and tackle the real issue, that of potential loss of life.
