A HOT air balloon in the shape of a huge Ordance Survey map took a flight over Birkenhead Park to help promote Geography Week.

The 100 feet high balloon was launched by Wirral Mayor Coun Hugh Lloyd and education director Chris Rice as schools across the borough took part in special projects based around transport, travel and communication.

Mr Rice said: "By taking part in an action packed week of events, students will be developing their geographical skills by exploring their local area and, we hope, having fun at the same time!"

Six school parties visited the park to take part in projects associated with National Geography Action Week.

Bus and cycle groups were formed by the pupils to carry out mapping skills exercises in the park and a talk on hot air ballooning and the importance of Ordance Survey was given by the pilot of the Ordance Survey balloon.

Other activities on offer included displays, quizzes, competitions, fieldwork activities organised by Wirral Ranger Service, visits to the North West Water Bus and various talks from hot air ballooning oficials.

There was also a display of specially adapted cycles available for children with disabilities.

The launch was sponsored by Merseytravel's Travelwise Campaign, Birkenhead Cycles, Hoylake Cycles, and Cycle Supplies of Hoylake.
