From Dr J.W. McCrone, Hon. Secretary, Wirral Local Medical Committee:-

WE must respond to Wirral West MP Stephen Hesford's comments in a story which appeared (Globe, February 9) under the headline: Charges Leave Tot Breathless.

GPs frequently receive requests for letters of support for many reasons related to their patients' health. A doctor's NHS pay does not cover the work or time involved in preparing such reports.

Doctors are, therefore, perfectly entitled to charge for such services and there are suggested BMA rates nationally which doctors can apply at their discretion.

Patients may, however, find that different charges are made by different practices and on occasions no charge is made. Contrary to Mr Hesford's letter, we believe charges are made by many practices.

It should be appreciated that GPs are under increasing pressure with their NHS work as well as such non-NHS demands.

When completing reports, the GP will use their knowledge of the area and of the patient's circumstances, which allows for discretion and greater understanding of the situation.

Doctors are well aware of the link between poor housing and health problems, but the solution surely is to improve the housing conditions.

Perhaps Mr Hesford would be better directing his energies in that direction, with the Housing Department of Wirral Borough Council, to help his constituents.
