MAYOR of Wirral Coun Hugh Lloyd, an avid Tranmere Rovers fan, took an important piece of local history to Wembley in honour of a former Mayor of Birkenhead whose generosity helped the Prenton Park club to survive in the early 1900s.

Coun. Lloyd, who was accompanied by his wife the Mayoress, Mrs Shirley Lloyd, chose to wear the chain of office worn by James H. McGaul, regarded as the father of the club, who served as President from the club's inception until it became a limited company in 1912.

Not only did McGaul become a respected figurehead in town life - he was a local JP and served as Mayor in 1908-09 - he kept the club 'in the black' when financial problems could have spelt the end of the club.

Said Coun Lloyd: "I thought it would be a nice to wear the chain, which is kept in the museum, to mark Tranmere Rovers' first ever appearance in a major cup final."
