WHATEVER security devices you have fitted to your car, there are always ways of ensuring you do not become a victim of vehicle crime.

Glass etching is a simple way to reduce the chances of your car being stolen and to increase the chances of it being recovered. Have the registration number, vehicle identification number or security number etched on all the windows and other glass.

Electronic anti-theft devices such as trackers or immobilisers can help, as can mechanical anti-theft devices. If you are buying mechanical products, they should be Thatcham or Sold Secure.

When leaving your car, there are many measures you can take to reduce the risk of crime. Always use your mechanical and/or electronic security devices.

At night, or in the mid afternoon at this time of year, park in well-lit spots. Close all windows and lock all doors and the boot.

Remove audio equipment front panels and anything else a thief may consider worthy of stealing. If there is nothing on show the chances of someone breaking into your car to steal something from it are greatly reduced.

Never leave items on display - remove them or put them in the boot.
