A LOCAL footballer is set to become the most expensive non-league player in history with at least six top clubs chasing his signature.

Gary Fletcher, from Widnes, a striker for Conference side Northwich Victoria, is valued at least £250,000.

And the cash-strapped Vics make no secret of the fact that they will sell their 19-year-old prize asset to the highest bidder.

Gary, a former Fairfield High School pupil, who gained two A levels in PE and Business Studies at Widnes Six Form College, has played at the Drill Field for three years.

The highlight of his career so far was playing for England under18s against Holland at Wembley.

Gary has scored 14 goals this season, seven of which were in the FA Cup.

Among the Premiership teams who have been watching in the life-long Liverpool fan are Everton, Aston Villa and Derby County, as well as First Division high flyers Fulham.

Gary this week told Sports World he would love a move to a big club as it would fulfil his childhood dream.

"I was flattered when I heard that top clubs were after me, and that Northwich value me so highly," he said.

"I was shocked when I heard that as many as 25 clubs have shown an interest in me!

"It has been my ambition to be a professional footballer since I was a kid, and a move to a big club would be a dream come true."

Northwich Victoria Club Secretary Derek Nutall said: "Gary did very well for us in the FA Cup and several top clubs have been watching him.

"No firm bids have been made yet but we would only listen to six-figure offers."
