SINCE King Canute demonstrated to his people that even a king could not prevent the tide from coming in, it has generally been accepted that it is fruitless to try to stop natural processes.
Sure it was nice to see people enjoying themselves on Hoylake beach 70 years ago, but just as parts of Britain's east coast are being eroded, so the Dee estuary has been silting up for centuries.
Should we not accept this with the resulting grass and marshes or should we seek to stop it somehow and maybe even move the old Hoylake lighthouse back to the seashore?
J. Clegg, Hoylake.
