AS the dust still settles on New York, stories are filtering through of desperate relatives trying to contact loved ones as the horrific events unfolded.
Among them were Beryl and Derek Barlow from Arrowe Park, who watched the terror attacks of Tuesday, September 11, on tv - knowing that their son could be caught up in the tragedy.
Thirty-one-year-old David has lived in Manhattan for seven years and Mr and Mrs Barlow tried desp;erately to get through to the city before David managed to call them to say he was safe.
Mrs Barlow says: "Now it seems so trivial compared to what those poor people had to put up with - but it was still absolutely horrific."
David has told his parents that New York feels like it is at war with people living in fear of another plane attack.
In the aftermath David laid a Union Jack in the huge makeshift memorial in Union Square. In the two hours that followed dozens of candles were left by the flag by British citizens wanting to show support.
