WIRRAL people are being warned to look out for bogus workmen operating in the borough.
Trading standards officers are urging residents to beware of bogus damp course installation companies.
They says the firms usually offer a free damp proof survey and then provide a so-called 'security code' which they say should be quoted to a salesman who will call later.
And they are advising people who may be tempted by any offers to ensure they receive at least one other quote from a reputable company.
Council officials say they want to prevent these firms from operating in Wirral by using new powers.
They ask anyone approached and offered a free damp proof survey by a firm which has not been invited to contact trading standards.
Wirral trading standards official Derek Payet says: "We have been advised of companies that seem to prey on the most vulnerable people in the community, using high-powered sales techniques and damp detection equipment which may give false readings.
"I would ask that consumers who have been approached by this company contact our consumer advice action desk on 666-5288."
