CARLSBERG West Cheshire League flag bearers Cammell Laird were hoping to put on a dazzling performance to match their newly installed floodlights when they entertained Rotherham outfit Parkgate last night (Tuesday) in an FA Challenge Vase second qualifying round replay at Kirklands (writes Ernie McDonald).

When the two sides locked horns on Saturday, 90 minutes failed to muster a goal, but in extra-time Laird drew first blood through Neil Larkin and although the home side levelled, a Chris McGinn double put the reigning West Cheshire League champions back in the driving seat.

It all went wrong for Laird in the last five minutes, however, when the hosts struck twice to earn a second crack.

Saturday's Pyke Cup first round action saw holders Poulton Victoria progress after efforts from Simon Lewis and Mike Riley curtailed Newton's interest, but a goal from Damien Lepts proved scant reward for Heswall, beaten 1-2 by Manweb (Kevin Pearson, Steve Cameron).

Goals by Hussain and Wynne were enough for Stork to go through at the expense of Mond Rangers.
