WIRRAL maintained their winning league run with a hard fought 36-7 home win against a well organised Ashton-on-Mersey side.

Ashton took the lead against the run of play with an interception try after five minutes. Wirral then suffered another set-back when Dave Halhead left the field injured, replaced by the strong but less mobile Jim Shields. Wirral used their strength to pressurise the Ashton line, eventually resulting in Mike Beamish crossing in the corner. Soon after, Beamish chipped ahead for him to touch down. Half-time: 12-7.

Nik Stott continued his try scoring run with a second-half score and further tries came from Ali Childs and Andy Gaskell. Paul Dinwoody marked his return to first team rugby with the try of the match. Gary Hastewell kicked three conversions.

The final score somewhat flattered Wirral, who will need to improve their finishing to pose a threat to league favourites Trentham and Southport, whom they play in the next few weeks.
