MORE than 1,500 jobs could be created by new plans to regenerate a derelict site in south Wirral.

The development will see high-quality light industry and office accommodation move into the 30-acre site of the former Royal Ordnance Factory next to Hooton Station.

At the moment, the former munitions factory is used by a number of scrap, warehouse, and oil and petrol storage businesses. The area will have to be decontaminated before work on the plans can be started.

Ellesmere Port & Neston MP Andrew Miller said: "It is extremely good news for the area. It has been a scruffy site for sometime and I'm certain with some sensitive planning it will be hugely beneficial for the community, especially with its close proximity to the railway."

Part of an £8 million European grant, awarded to Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council, will be used for the development. And it is hoped that the plans will attract more money from the public and private sectors in match-funding.

It is believed that the development will not increase traffic congestion through the nearby picturesque village of Willaston because of the closeness of the railway station and M53 motorway.
