AT last, the waiting is over. The Summer crown green bowling season is about to get underway with the traditional curtain raiser of the season - the Wirral & District Crown Green Bowling Association's Mayor's Charity Handicap (writes Brian Hampson).

Qualifying has been taking place this week - and already a piece of history has been made, with lady bowlers competing against their male counterparts for the first time in the Association's history.

Four lady bowlers, Pat Crowther, Kath Davies, Joan Dewhurst and Lynsey Gorman, all entered with high hopes of making it through to Saturday's finals day (April 16), when the last 16 competitors line-up at Pensby Bowling Club (2pm). Can Nick Burridge retain the title he won last year or will there be a new name on the trophy, possibly a lady bowler?

Wallasey Crown Green Bowling Association's Five-a-Side competition starts tomorrow (Thursday, April 14), along with Bebington & District Men's Bowling League's George O'Neill Trophy.
