Carlsberg West Cheshire League round-up with Ernie MacDonald

PETER McNulty and Kieran Fleetwood bagged the goals as Carlsberg West Cheshire League Division One leaders Heswall overcame Castrol Social 2-0 to keep their noses in front in the race to land the title which has eluded them since1988.

Chester challengers Christleton are on level points from the same number of games, but despite beating West Kirby 3-0, with goals by Chris Herbert, 2, and Paul Hallows, their goal difference is four less than the leaders.

Both sides face relegation candidates this evening (Wednesday, April 13), with Heswall at home to bottom club General Chemicals and Christleton entertaining Mallaby.

After turning Ashville over 4-1 in midweek, Vauxhall Motors Reserves settled for a point after finishing 1-1 with Maghull. Mike Smith and Neil McQueen were the respective marksmen.

Following Monday's 2-0 eclipse of the Motormen, Newton edged nearer to safety by winning 4-0 against Merseyside Police on Thursday before finishing 1-1 with Mallaby on Saturday, a Nick Cooper goal cancelling out an opener from Newton's Joey Kelly.

Mallaby's 5-0 midweek demolition of MANWEB featured goals from Shaun Keevey, 2, Dean Stewart, 2, and Gary Duckers.

Runcorn outfit General Chemicals were plunged deeper into relegation crisis after conceding 2-1 at home to Ashville, Mike Douglas and Steve Abbott finding the net for the Wallasey side.

With four games to play, current Division Two leaders Mond Rangers are a point ahead of New Brighton - and on Saturday they eclipsed Ashville Reserves 2-0, thanks to a goal apiece from Mark Robinson and Gary Lunt. New Brighton posted the same result against Chester Nomads and are now in a strong position, with a game in hand on Mond - and two goals better off.

A smart double from Poulton Victoria Reserves' Gareth Owen was cancelled out by a brace from Heswall Reserves' Kevin Coles.

The Division Three title is still in the melting pot, with three clubs tussling for the two promotion places. Long time leaders Willaston recorded their 19th league win of the season, and were indebted to a solitary effort from talisman, Karl Dunbar, to unlock a stubborn Merseyside Police Reserves.
