TOMMY Smith couldn't have picked a better time to score his 28th goal of the season, his astute finish proving decisive as PSI defied the odds in beating strongly fancied Wirral Hotel 1-0 to secure their passage to the Wirral Sunday League Senior Cup Final (writes Rob James).

In Division One, the day's surprise result was Towers' defeat by inconsistent performers Wirral Health. The leaders forfeited three valuable points after Ian Wallace and Neil Morris struck to give the Hospital men a welcome 2-0 victory.

That result enabled second-placed Old House to reduce the leaders' advantage to three points, after Danny Burke, Steve Metcalfe, Dave Jones and Alan Dewhurst netted in a 4-1 win over Halfway House.

27 Club top scored on the day, beating luckless Tranmere Supporters 9-0, inspired by hat-trick star Martin Reeve and two-goal sidekick Dave Berry.

ESWA cursed their luck in the last five minutes against Tixalls after an own goal and a Mike Murray effort saw them look good for maximum returns. The visitors had other ideas, however, and nicked a share of the spoils thanks to a stunning strike from Steve Jones and a last gasp equaliser from Richie Jones.

Title outsiders Victoria Seniors also took advantage on the day and made ground after Ben England, Glen Rooney and Andy Crilley found the net in a hard-earned 3-2 triumph over Wirral Athletic.
