THOUSANDS of motorcyclists took part in Wirral's 30th Egg Run at the weekend.

An estimated 12,000 bikers set off from New Brighton promenade for the 20-mile trip to Clatterbridge Hospital on Sunday morning.

The route took them through Wallasey Village, Moreton, West Kirby, Heswall and Thornton Hough.

Along the way they collected donations from spectators who lined the streets. The exact amount raised on the day is not yet known.

Graham Heron, spokesman for the event's organising committee, told the Globe: "It was an absolutely fantastic turnout. We had estimates that there were between 10,000 to 15,000 bikes, but I'd put the final figure nearer to 12,000.

"It was certainly one of the largest, in terms of turnout.

"It's too early to say, or even estimate, how much was raised this year, because the money is still being counted. But we should know later this week.

"The event started half an hour later than scheduled, because traffic cones had to be installed on part of the route for safety reasons, but apart from that it passed off without incident and was very enjoyable.

"Among the highlights for me was the mayoress, who turned up dressed as Catwoman."
