PRINCE Edward, The Earl of Wessex, has helped celebrate Birkenhead School's 150th anniversary by opening its new prep building.
The school's first Royal visitor performed the opening ceremony last week.
Following a tour of the school, he listened to the School’s chapel choir, watched students rehearse a play and had lunch with staff and students.
During his two-hour visit, he was accompanied by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Jennifer Grundy; the High Sheriff of Merseyside, David McDonnell, Wirral's Mayor and Mayoress, cllr Andrew and Kathryn Hodson, and Jim Wilkie, Wirral council's deputy chief executive.
Following the visit, headmaster John Clark said: "He was very natural and showed a real interest in everyone he met. He had the Royal knack of putting people at their ease.
"At the end of Prince Edward's visit, when he opened the new Prep building, he joked with the children and managed to make unveiling the brass plaque the most fun event in the world!
"It was a very special occasion which we shall all remember for a long time to come."
