A WIRRAL school has welcomed a new addition to the classroom - a three-foot penguin called Jingles.

It was bought for Grove Street Primary school by New Ferry Farmer’s Market as part of 'A Winters Tale' – a Liverpool art project involving primary and secondary schools across the region.

The images on the front of Jingles are of the sun, together with the earth melting.

Wirral South MP Ben Chapman met the penguin during a visit to the school on Friday.

Jingles will join flocks of other penguins who will be on display in the city throughout the festive period, from November 23.

Teacher Sue Bullivant said: "The children invited Ben to the school so that he could meet Jingles, and so that he could hear their thoughts on global warming.

"This project has really helped to develop their awareness of the real threat of climate change, and has made them really enthusiastic about doing things as individuals to reduce the effects of climate change on endangered species".
