At nearly 63 miles to the gallon, the new Renault Megane is greener and more economical than ever before.

With its sporty appearance, it’s a huge improvement on its predecessor, and it no longer feels the need to ‘shake that ass’, the rear having disappeared to give the car a sleeker up-to-date feel, if a little on the plain side.

Three trim levels are available - Expression, Dynamique and Privilège – and there’s a range of four petrol and three diesel engines between hatch and coupe to choose from.

The modest 1.5 was a good performer, if a little conservative, with a quietish engine, plenty of grip and light steering.

My hatred of keycards continues though, as Renault insist on using the chunky credit card device in place of keys.

Normal keys are just easier and much more convenient. I can, however, only speak for female motorists – although I’ve heard of keycards snapping in half when they’ve been placed in men’s back pockets.

Standard kit on the new Megane includes air conditioning, six airbags, electric heated body coloured door mirrors and front and rear electric windows.

Other features include Bluetooth telephony, CD stereo with MP3 connectivity, automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control and air conditioning.
