A Wirral MP has presented a petition to Parliament with close to 500 signatures protesting at the closure of Higher Bebington library scheduled for tomorrow, April 4.

Wirral South MP Ben Chapman has campaigned against the council’s decision to close 11 libraries.

He said he is "angry and disappointed" at both the form and substance of the local authority's Strategic Asset Review. Mr Chapman is urging the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Andy Burnham, to intervene.

Mr Chapman said: “I have emphasised on a number of occasions the importance of protecting local libraries for local people. "I am deeply saddened by the forthcoming closures and I am frustrated that this decision was taken without, in my view, adequate consultation with libraries users, employees and stakeholders.

" I am further dismayed that the Secretary of State has thus far declined to intervene.

“This is the second such petition I have presented within a matter of three weeks, the last being in relation to Eastham library.

"I have, again, written to DCMS urging the Secretary of State to act”

Mr Burnham has previosuly indicated that he is "not mindful" to intervene, saying the issue is a matter for the council.
