So there is a secret club in Wallasey… It’s been hiding in plain sight…

Do you want to know what it is?

Women’s captain Jan McArd classed the club as a “proper running club” and that it “brings people together.”

Over the past 116 years, since the name change in 1908, local athletic club Wallasey AC has been assembling the community together with a passion for running for both mental and physical wellbeing.

Wallasey AC were originally an athletics club but have made the gradual switch to a running club that takes people of all paces and skill levels. Just recently, the number of women joining the club has risen, but the active committee are always looking for new members.

With the overall atmosphere of the club being extremely positive and it being instrumental to where it is today, it is obvious that there is a sense of togetherness from everyone involved.

Whether you are a serious runner or just want to get out of the house, Wallasey AC might be for you! Including multiple different types of running: road running, multi-terrain, cross-country, and relays. If you want to be supported, sessions like Fartlek give opportunities for slightly slower runners to be mustered (to be guided or supported) to runs on a summer’s night along New Brighton beach. There is something for everyone in this club.

Wallasey AC is known across the county, and there have been some astounding achievements just recently. For example, some members got the experience to run the London Marathon and also the Boston Marathon on the 17th April 2023, but one woman is arguably the club’s most successful and famous female athlete.

Her name is Barbara Banks, and after being persuaded to join the club in the early 1960’s, she transformed from just another keen athlete to a world and national record holder for the 3000m. During this period, Barbara was also selected to represent England on many occasions.

All you need is a pair of legs and comfortable clothing; this may be an amazing opportunity for you!

Fancy dress runs and award nights at Leasowe Golf Club—could this be a changing point for you to make new friends and achieve your goal? It really would be fun!
