The Birkenhead Reference Library, which is located inside Birkenhead Central Library, has lots of useful resources to do this.

They offer a drop-in service during opening hours.

If you are not in the area you can submit a research request. The first half hour of research is free and there is a charge of £12 per half hour thereafter for this service.

There is also an additional charge for commercial research.

At Birkenhead Reference Library you will find:

  • 180 street directories dating from 1766
  • 390 volumes of electoral registers from 1862 to 2023
  • 3500 reels of microfilm including parish records, cemetery records and local newspapers
  • Over 25,000 digitised photographs of the local area
  • Over 16,000 local history items available on request

Opening hours are:

  • Monday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm
  • Tuesday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm
  • Wednesday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm
  • Thursday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm
  • Friday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm
  • Saturday - 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm
