A WIRRAL charity that helps people with learning disabilities is hosting a stand-up "comedy legends" night to raise vital funds.

Wirral Mencap, based on Market Street in Birkenhead was established in the 1950s by a group of local parents and carers of children and adults with a learning disability. It was then registered as a charity in 1963.

They support people all over Wirral with a learning disability by:

  • Championing equality and promoting independence
  • Providing knowledge and building confidence
  • Connecting people to their community
  • Collaborating, informing and sharing best practice

Wirral Mencap also works closely with members and their families, offering opportunities and advance equality, ensuring learning disabilities are no barrier to a full and successful life.

For several years, with the exception of the pandemic, they have have organised a stand-up comedy night to raise much-needed funds. The comedians are not progressionals, instead, they are brave individuals looking to support the charity, whilst taking on a personal challenge by standing on stage for the first time doing standup.

The event will take place in November this year, with a new group of first-time comedians, but for the first time, they are also running a Legends Comedy Night. This sees the return of past winners who will battle it out to decide who the ultimate standup comedian is.

This event is being held in the Prentonian Suite at Tranmere Rovers on Thursday (June 22) from 7pm.

Debbie Green, a fundraiser for the charity, said: "This event sees the return of past winners who will battle it out to decide who the ultimate standup comedian is.

"This year is the 60th year of Wirral Mencap, with many local businesses supporting by running a variety of fundraising activities to raise funds and awareness of Wirral Mencap to ensure that we can continue to support people with learning disabilities on the Wirral."
