Wirral Labour councillors are pushing for a crackdown on fly-tipping and rolling up their sleeves for a greener, cleaner borough.

Labour action teams across Wirral have been working to help neighbours come together with the council to tidy up alleyways to use them as secure communal space, litter pick in their area and make sure plots of land are tidy and free of litter.

This followed Labour’s pledge to keeping our streets and alleyways clean and tidy, tackling grot spots and fly-tipping across the borough.

After spotting alleyways filled with furniture, toys, rubbish, and overgrowth in Bell Road and Rappart Road, Seacombe Labour councillor Paul Stuart escalated the issue with senior council officers.

Following Cllr Stuart’s intervention, the council and its contractors cleared the alleyway, removing several tonnes of waste, fly tipping and overgrowth.

Cllr Stuart said: "While most people take pride in the area they live, a small minority persistently dump their unwanted items. Disposing of household furniture, electrical items, bags of rubbish or building materials in the street or alleyways makes our community look run down and affects the quality of life for everyone. It is illegal to deposit household items in the alleyway, and anyone discarding items in such a manner is committing a criminal offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and may be liable to prosecution.

“We know that most residents love where they live and work hard to keep it looking its best. Together with the Seacombe Labour action team, including Tom Laing and Kaitlin Stuart, I have supported residents coming together and turning their alleyways into a secure communal space, developing an unloved, neglected area into a usable space. These great initiatives bring neighbours together and demonstrate that we all love where we live.”

In New Ferry, Labour councillor Sue Percy and Labour’s Bromborough action team members Finlay Gordon and Brenda Ashton have been working on a huge clean-up of alleyways around Napier Road, Ingleby Road, Woodford Road, Cecil Road, Leigh Road and Edgerton Road.

Cllr Percy says: “Fly-tipping is a real nuisance in our green spaces and can stop vital access to alleyways. Labour made it a priority in our 2023 budget to keep alleyway clearance and street cleaning teams, and we have a plan in place to combat fly-tipping with robust enforcement.

“We have reported issues across the borough, getting teams to clear alleys where necessary, and also regularly roll up our sleeves and, together with the Labour Action Teams, get our litter-pickers and rubbish bags out and do it ourselves.
