VIDEO footage showing a driver and passenger clinging onto a mattress resting on the roof of a moving car has been branded “bizarre” by Wirral residents.

The footage shows the driver and the passenger holding onto the mattress through the car windows as the driver travels through Leasowe. At one point in the video, the mattress flies up in the air before the pair manage to grab it back again.

The red Citron car was spotted driving down Leasowe Road on Sunday (February 26) by another passenger who captured the footage of his phone.

The man filming the incident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “When you think you have seen it all. holding it on by the rear passenger and the driver.”

Another person added: “That is so dangerous!”

A second said: “And if that came off the roof it could cause a nasty accident. Such stupidity.”

A third resident commented: “Saw this on main road Dun Laoghaire to Wexford road. Driver and all three passengers. Human stupidity knows no bounds.”

UK guidance states that objects attached to the roof must be “securely fastened” either by straps or similar means or by a fixed rigid metal frame.

The item must not protrude more than 50 cm from the side, rear or front of the car. Road users must also not attach anything to the roof that could cause damage to the car, come loose and fall onto the road while the car is in motion, or injure other road users in the event of an accident.

Drivers caught breaking these rules could be issued with a fine and up to six points on their driving licence.
