A PHYSIOTHERAPIST has opened a new rehab centre for dogs and horses.

Claire Burgess, 41, from Thingwall, graduated from The University of Teesside in 2003 with a BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy for humans.

Claire currently works with the NHS two days a week with the rapid response team.

She then went back to university and completed her Master's degree in vet physiotherapy in 2013 which allowed her to go on and treat animals.

Speaking to the Globe, Claire said: "I'd always wanted to work with animals and I'd never realised you could be an animal physio until someone mentioned it."

In her work, Claire does lots of preventative checks on horses, such as saddle checks and making sure they're comfortable and can work to the best of their ability.

She also helps dogs with slipped disc, following orthopaedic or neurological surgery or managing old age by laser therapy, manual therapy and a water treadmill.

Claire added: "The main thing is being able to provide the best possible care for each animal.

"You see so much satisfaction when you see a dog come in after surgery who can't walk and six weeks later, you discharge the dog with reasonable fitness."
