POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 17-year-old girl was hit by a car in Wallasey village.

At 5.15pm on Thursday, April 17 a light blue Peugeot 106 was being driven along Leasowe Road towards the Wallasey Village roundabout.

The vehicle hit the 17-year-old, who ended up on the car's bonnet, smashing the windscreen.

She suffered minor bruising to her knee and police are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police say that prior to the collision there had been an altercation between several people, including the 20-year-old female driver of the car and the 17-year-old girl involved in the collision on the forecourt of the Cost Cutter garage on the opposite side of Leasowe Road.

It's believed the incident, which happened after the car had made a u-turn near the junction with Mosslands Drive to face towards Wallasey Village roundabout, was witnessed by several people.

The 17-year-old, who had black hair and was wearing black combat trousers and a navy T-shirt at the time of the incident, was treated for minor injuries. Police arrested the car's driver, a 20-year-old woman from the Moreton area, on suspicion of assault.

All those involved in the initial dispute have been spoken to, however, the nature of the collision remains unclear at this stage of the investigation and police are appealing to any witnesses to it to come forward.

Detective constable Hayley Roche said: "This was rush hour on a busy main road and we believe there are a large number of potential witnesses to this incident. I would urge them to come forward so that we can establish what happened.

"The traffic was backed up along Leasowe Road following the incident as the car could not be driven with the broken windscreen and I believe there will have been other motorists who may have had a clear view of what happened.

"In particular, I would appeal to the driver of a white van, which was directly behind the Peugeot at the time of the collision, to give us a call. There were also a number of people close by on foot who may be vital witnesses.

"If you were there and you think you may be able to help us with our enquiries, please contact me at Upton CID via 0151 709 6010 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
