COUNCILS UNITE TO SCRAP TOLLS

WIRRAL councillors have united in their campaign to scrap the controversial Mersey Tunnel tolls.

During a full council meeting at Wallasey Town Hall on Monday evening, Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors voted in favour of a Conservative motion that called for the tolls to be abolished as they have been in Scotland.

Liberal Democrat group leader Simon Holbrook moved an amendment that additional finance costs of running the tunnels would not be met by Wirral's taxpayers, which had full-party support.

There were also calls for a scheme similar to that of the Dartford Tunnel model, where substantial discounts would be offered for people using it. That scheme will not be introduced until August.

But at about 8.30pm the time guillotine was brought down on the meeting, which meant the further issues could not be debated.

Conservative councillor for Moreton West and Saughall, Chris Blakeley, said: "It may well be pie in the sky to have a toll free tunnel for Wirral, but we are prepared to work on it.

"The tunnels should be part of the national road network and maintained as such, and therefore be toll free. We need to work with Merseytravel, the Mersey Tunnel Users Association and other bodies to see how this can be done."

Members of the Mersey Tunnel Users Association staged a demonstration outside the town hall prior to the meeting.

Secretary John McGoldrick said: "The council have said that they want the tolls to be scrapped so we'll be watching to see what happens.

"The tunnels currently take £38m a year, mostly from Wirral people, and I would urge them to press their councillors and MPs for action on this. Lobbying MPs in Scotland has lead to the tolls being scrapped."

Election next week - if local Labour and Lib Dems are so against tunnel tolls why didn't the former do more to stop their Labour government from passing the tunnel bill and why didn't the latter encourage their councillors to vote on the issue (8 sat on the fence). It's so easy, now that the bill has passed, for them to say they are against the tunnel toll- if they really cared they would have done something when it counted and really could make a difference?

no free tunnel!!, wirral says...

what the toll-free tunnel brigade are forgetting is the environmental impact a free tunnel will have!
more cars using tunnel means more traffic jams 9if it could get any worse anyway!!!), more petrol use and pollutants AND higher public transport costs to subsidise the lack of fewer people using the trains and buses!! is that good for wirral and our future? it cant be! the tunnel should be £5 each way then more peo[ple would get public transport it would be better for our childrens environment, less traffic jams and cheaper bus and train fares!! nothing is free so money would be found from your pockets via other means!!

If the mainstream parties were serious about dealing with congestions and pollution they would never endorse scrapping the tolls. It is a blatant vote grab and gesture politics at it’s worst.

We could replace the tolls with a congestion-charge type scheme for Liverpool city centre that would be much fairer and flexible and would raise funds for public transport across Merseyside. This has worked in London where it is now endorsed by all the main parties.

Our oil dependency has to be tackled and this means a major shift away from cars to more sustainable forms of transport. Scrapping the tolls just takes us in the wrong direction and simply transfers the cost to the taxpayer.

Before everyone gets carried away, what do the tolls get spent on? If there is no toll, will this increase council tax?!
I'm not against a £1 toll but having a van now means I don't use the tunnel. It's not worth crossing through so they've lost my money anyway...

I agreed that £1 a trip is reasonable with perhaps proper discounts if you pay weekly rather than the rubbish discount they currently give. Ask this why in Preston are buses £7 a week, and in liverpool £9 a week yet a weekly ticket in the wirral to include liverpool travel is £14 everyone is ripping us off

Dear me Hippocrates caught out again, sounding remarkably like a Tory election leaflet. It is important for you to get your facts straight - the Lib Dem from Wirral on Merseytravel voted against the recent toll rise.

All the others are from other Councils on Merseyside.

All the Councillors (of any party) from other Councils want the tolls to remain and keep rising because it means the money doesn't have to come out of their budgets.

As has been pointed out already the tolls hit Wirral people harder than anyone else - therefore all Wirral Councillors of all Parties voted against the recent rise and again on Monday against having the tolls at all.

Don't be fooled by this cheap publicity stunt from the council just before the elections. They have done this because they are losing seats rapidly, (from info gained at postal vote exit polls) and are running scared. The tunnels were originally tolled to pay for their construction, not to continually penalise it's users.

Quieten down folks and take a step back. This is our council being transparent, to the extent you can see right through them.
Do you truly believe they are going to fight for a toll free tunnel, not on your life, this is just to make YOU think how wonderful they are so you vote for them in a few days time.
Don't be conned.

Paul - my facts were straight - 8 lib dems abstained.

The fact that one lib dem voted against means nothing.

If that lib dem was really against the toll why didn't he persuade his 'friends' - the lib dems from other areas- to vote. Or don't the lib dems on Wirral talk to the lib dems on Liverpool?

i really don't buy it - it just sounds like shameless electioneering to me.

I will also say that I am no Tory - I'm just fed up with the lot of them!

I did vote lib dem in the past but can safely say I will not be voting for anyone on May 1st.

p.s. I don't think it should be free - i agree that £1 would be fine. if it was purely about the environment then they would have reduced the fee for buses but they didn't! - I agree that it appears the money is going on nice offices (?and shrubs).

I can't believe my eyes !!! Weeks after increasing the toll (tax)by only 10p they are now thinking of dropping it altogether. It must be coming up to a local election and this bunch of grabbers must be very very worried the gravy train is coming to a halt.

38m a year!!! £104,000 a day!!! And still a balance outstanding. How much does a hole in the ground cost???? I can only imagine the hardship you would have to endure if you had a £1 toll having to get by on £80,000 a day. Never mind rip off Britain its rip off Wirral.

Do my ears deceive me or have I just heard that Merseytravel have commissioned a statue of Ken Dodd.
What on earth are Merseytravel getting involved in such a project. Public transport is there business. No offence Ken you deserve recognition but not by Merseytravel. No wonder they insist on increasing tunnel tolls. Its about time Scales and Dowd got their priorities right.
