A WOMAN from Wirral was “blown away” by the response to her crochet post box topper inspired by the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Sandra Birch, 59, from Wallasey said she never expected her royal creation to go viral when she shared photographs of it on Facebook.

The topper, situated on Harrison Drive in New Brighton, displays a crochet-waving Queen in a castle with a royal guard and has been liked and shared over 50,000 times.

Sandra told the Globe: “I’ve always crocheted but I started making the toppers last year during the lockdown.

“My first one was a Remembrance Day one and I’ve since made Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter-themed ones.”

Despite the popularity of her other creations with residents, Sandra said she was “gobsmacked” when she discovered the popularity of her most recent topper.

She said: “All my friends who had seen it told me how amazing it was, but I certainly didn’t think it was going to get over 50,000 likes in a couple of days.

“I was gobsmacked when I found out.”

The topper has been on display since April 27 to mark the birthday of a friend who Sandra lost last year.

She said: “The castle alone took me three weeks to make and then the other details took me another three weeks, so it’s been quite the project.

“I was just blown away with the amount of kind comments on social media. People have been so lovely.

“The reason behind me doing it is that I love the reaction of people walking past and taking pictures.

She added: “When I go to put them out, I get people driving past beeping and putting their thumbs up to me or people walking past asking if they can take a picture.

“It’s about enjoying my hobby and making people smile.”
