THE Tower Road bridge between Birkenhead and Wallasey has reopened after a closure this afternoon.
Engineers from Peel Ports were at the bridge carrying out maintenance work this afternoon.
The bridge opened in June, after more than a year of replacement work. It caused frustration and unavoidable delays for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The work was due to end in January, but delayed by the discovery of an obstruction behind the dock walls, which was only uncovered during excavation work.
It meant the permanent foundation for the new ‘A’ bridge had to be moved.
In February the planned 'floating-in’ of the new structure was postponed. The earliest this could be rescheduled with dock owners Peel Ports was April.
The bridge was successfully moved into place in April and opened two months later, after extensive tests. It was finally opened on June 28.
