A FUN run held in memory of a Wirral boxer who lost his life to cancer is set to host its fifth anniversary race.

Brett Jones, 56, passed away just eight weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2014.

The 10k fun run, which will take place on Saturday, June 9 from 10.30am along the sea front in Hoylake, will raise cash for both the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and local boxing clubs who work with children and young people.

A former Woodchurch High School pupil, Brett was a member of Willaston and Wallasey boxing clubs and represented the North West in competitions across the country.

When he retired from competing Brett coached dozens of young people in the sport.

The family event will consist of the 'Brett Jones 'Heavyweight' Memorial 10k Fun Run' while junior runners can take part in the 'Brett Jones Golden Mile Fun Run' from 9.30am with both races open to anyone of any ability.

As part of the fifth anniversary celebrations, all junior finishers will be handed a copy of the Liverpool Heartbeat superhero comic while the first 150 runners in the 10k will receive a commemorative t-shirt.

Trophies will also be presented to the first man and woman who run across the finish line.

Secretary of Wallasey Amateur Boxing Club Terry Finlay said: “From the outset we wanted to make it an annual event.

"We are hoping we can match the money we raise year on year

“Brett did an awful lot for people and he was such a lovely person, a true local super hero.

"He was a caring friend to everyone around him.

"He sponsored a football team in Africa and when he was first diagnosed he came in to the club and donated £500.”

Runners are also being invited to dress as a superhero and personalise their own bibs to run in honour of someone special.

All entrants can take part in the 'Underground Training Station warm up and a free pre and post-run massage from Dave Thomas at Massage for Life.
