TRIBUTES are being paid to a 30-year-old dad who died following a crash in Birkenhead.

John Barker, from Wallasey, was walking on Oxton Road at the junction on Exmouth Street at around 7.40pm on Tuesday, February 20 when he was struck by a silver Vauxhall Astra.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene.

John suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment where he passed away on Monday, April 9.

John’s mum, Julie Bunker said: “I’m trying to stay strong for John’s daughter Mia, but sadly my beautiful son gained his angel wings on Monday morning.

"I’m broken and lost and I just want my son back.

“My family and I are all broken hearted, but I’m determined for his legacy to live on in Mia and we will let her know how special her daddy was and the strong loving bond they had together.

“John, you fought right to the end but your body got too tired.

"Before you left us, I whispered in your ear 'If you have fought with all your strength and want to go, then go. Don't keep fighting just for us as you’re so weak.'

"John then closed his eyes and peacefully passed away.

“Goodnight my son, I’m broken and my world has been smashed to bits but this is not goodbye, this is goodnight and see you soon.”

Merseyside Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward to help with the investigation.

Constable Cliff Shaw from Roads Policing Investigations said: “We’re really sad to announce that John died following this incident at the start of this week.

"This means it is now imperative that we speak to anyone that might have seen the collision take place.

"This is a busy junction in the Charing Cross area of Birkenhead, close to the tunnel so I would ask that you cast your minds back and if you think you may have information that could help us with the appeal then please get in touch."
