A SERIES of workshops have been launched for employers to help support colleagues living with cancer.

The quarterly workshops have been created by a partnership with employment lawyers from Brabners and Maggie's Merseyside to help employers understand the emotional, physical and psychological needs of employees with cancer.

Centre head Kathy Wright said: “Here at Maggie’s, we know that a cancer diagnosis can affect every aspect of your life – including your work life.

"Each person is different and whilst the majority of people are unable to work during their treatment, some people are.

"Returning to work after treatment is also different for each individual – it can be an important part of your identity with people keen to return to work, or it can prove a worrying challenge, or something that isn’t even an option.

"We want to work with local employers to help them understand the emotional, physical and psychological needs of employees with cancer or those supporting a loved one with cancer, and approach situations with knowledge, empathy and understanding.

"We are delighted to be working with the employment team at Brabners to offer practical guidance and help employers create the right framework to support employees with cancer.”

The course is open to line managers, unions reps, HR and occupational health teams.

Employment solicitor at Brabners, Susan McKenzie said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with Maggie’s Merseyside to deliver Dealing with Cancer in the Workplace workshops.

"As one of the largest genuinely specialist employment law teams in the North West, we recognise that an employer’s most important asset is its workforce.

"At the workshops, we will provide practical guidance to local employers, including through interactive case studies, showing how to support colleagues with cancer and how to get it right from an employment law perspective.”
