A WIRRAL RSPCA inspector is urging people to take part in The Great British Spring Clean to make a positive impact to the local area.

Anthony Joynes will take part in the campaign from Friday, March 2 to Sunday March 4 in an attempt to make the borough eco-friendly.

He is now asking for families and friends to spend an hour or two outdoors helping to clean up the borough's country parks and coastlines.

Anthony told the Globe: "As a Wirral inspector i'm keen to get behind it also as we often see the real damage first hand that littering results in.

"We collect hundreds of wild animals locally and thousands throughout the country every year that have been severely injured due to human negligence.

"Whether it is plastic beer can holders or pieces of discarded netting/fishing equipment we are creating a huge problem for our environment and oceans as well as their inhabitants.

"It may only be the minority who are frequently littering without a second thought but we are all responsible for making sure our oceans thrive for future generations.

"Plastic is having a catastrophic effect on marine life.

"This isn't a local problem at all, plastic can travel many thousands of miles carried by the tides and therefore this is something that we can all get involved in and make a difference.

"Sparing a couple of hours ideally but even just a few minutes here and there.

"If you see plastic or litter, don't just think that's someone's else's problem, make it your problem and as long as it's safe to do so, pick it up and pop it in the bin - it could save the life my number of marine animals.

"I recently led by example and took my family to Wirral country park and spent an hour cleaning the strand line there.

"It was surprising just how much plastic and other litter that we collected in a short space of time.

"It is also an incredibly rewarding feeling knowing that you're making a difference by doing something so simple."
