POLICE are hunting a group of yobs after a man was attacked by a hammer in Upton.

Merseyside Police were called at around 7.50pm on Wednesday after a 49-year-old man was assaulted by a group of boys aged around 17-years-old following an altercation on Greystoke Close.

A hammer and piece of wood are believed to have been used in the attack.

The man sustained a serious head injury and was taken to hospital.

His condition is described as stable.

The attackers were dressed in black clothing with hoods.

CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are currently underway.

Detective inspector Paul Parry said: "This was a nasty attack on a man near his home and while the victim suffered a serious injury to his head, he is very fortunate the injuries were not more serious.

“People in Merseyside should be allowed to go about their daily business without being subjected to an assault such as this and we appeal to anyone who has any information to call us."
