SIX bright young writers received an award for their stories as part of the Wonderful Writers competition.

The mayor of Wirral councillor Ann McLachlan invited the youngsters to the Mayor's Parlour at Wallasey Town Hall to receive their prize on Monday, November 6.

Set up by Wirral Libraries and Read Now Write Now, Wonderful Writers  took place during the school summer holidays for children aged five to eight and nine to 11 years of age in Wirral.

Prizes included a family ticket for this year's pantomime at the Floral Pavilion and the world premiere of David Walliams’s Awful Auntie, £25 worth of Morrisons book vouchers and £10 Waterstones voucher.

In first place in both categories was Georgia Williams and Megumi Hoshiko, in second place Holly Davies and Charlotte Williams and in third place Delta Roylance and Lucy McEneany.

Head judge and director of Read Now Write Now Charlie Lea said: “It was an absolute pleasure to read all the children’s stories over the summer holidays.

"There is a wealth of creative writing talent in Wirral and we are so happy to help run this competition in partnership with Wirral Libraries and nurture writing in our region.

"A big well done to the winners and everyone who submitted their story in 2017, I am already looking forward to reading all the stories next year.”

The winners’ stories and commended entries will be put on display in a number of libraries across the borough in the next few weeks.
