WIRRAL dance group MerseyGirls are encouraging other teenage girls across the borough to take part in sport.

The Britain's Got Talent finalists have signed up as ambassadors for Wirral's This Girl Can campaign in the hope that they can get girls, like themselves into sport.

Made up of best friends Alice, Poppy, Julia, Annie and Rebecca MerseyGirls were close to winning the £250,000 cash prize - hoped to go towards getting specialist surgery for lead member Julia Carlile who battles with the spinal condition scoliosis.

However music mogul Simon Cowell offered to pay for her surgery and Julia travelled to America in July to have the pioneering operation so that she could continue to dance.

She is now continuing to recover with swimming and gentle exercise.

Cabinet Member for Children and Families Cllr Bernie Mooney said: "We’re really excited to have the MerseyGirls on board with the campaign.

"They made quite a name for themselves on Britain’s Got Talent and are great role models for others to look to for inspiration.

“Each girl in the group will have their own story that other teens can relate to.

"They’ll be great ambassadors for our campaign here in Wirral helping other teenage girls to have that confidence to give an activity a go.”

This Girl Can Wirral aims to help girls aged 13 to 18 feel confident to take part in sports.
