MORE than 3,000 people have signed an online petition urging tougher action to tackle the menace of scrambler bikes across Wirral.

The campaign was launched by Conservative councillor for Moreton West & Saughall, Bruce Berry, following increasing number of complaints from residents.

His petition, www.change.org/p/wirral-safer-hub-stop-scrambler-bike-nuisance, was launched on Saturday and has already been signed by 3,351 people.

Councillor Berry told the Globe: "Scrambler bikes are a menace on our roads, parks and open spaces.

"Mums and dads in Lingham Park have told me of their fears for the safety of their children because of the thoughtless actions of some of the kids on these bikes.

"This problem is found in communities across Wirral."

"This is the first test for the new 'Safer Wirral Hub' set up by the police, council and other agencies."

"They need to work together to tackle this problem and quickly – our parks and roads need to be reclaimed from those who couldn't care less for the danger they are causing to others."

Inspector Paul Harrison told the Globe recently: "I am aware of concerns from members of the public, particular in relation to the Moreton and Leasowe areas, about antisocial behaviour involving motorbikes and off-road bikes.

"I would like to reassure our communities that work is ongoing in relation to this matter and we have had considerable success although we understand that work still needs to be done to alleviate the issue.

"I would also encourage people to pass on information which allows us to investigate fully and bring those responsible to justice.

"Our officers will also continue to work proactively to find and disrupt those who use and store illegal and nuisance off-road motorbikes.

"We will continue to act on any information so if you know where these bikes are being stored or who is storing them, call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
